Dame, can the terms intersex and hermaphrodite be used interchangeably? All of these labels confuse me to no end...
Technically speaking intersex people are 99% not hermaphrodites.
That is, in modern terms hermaphrodite refers to something that can function as both sexes, whereas intersex people, while being technically both sexes, usually are not fertile as both sexes, let alone one.
That being said, even those who are true hermaphrodites don’t like the term so it’s best to not even use it for them. Something along the same lines of why we use the term “race” or “ethnicity” as opposed to “breed” for humans; people think it’s “not human enough”.
